It's the end of the year! Though it is nice to get out of school, I think it is also sad because you leave your teachers, friends and all the experiments we get to do. Also, I have to think; one more year until I graduate from Countryside. Now think back and think about your favorite time at Countryside, what was that favorite time? Was it field day, a field trip or the Back-to-School BBQ? I, also, wanted to talk about field day, there are barely any bouncies! Last year there was one bouncie, two years ago there were five bouncies? Let's hope this year we have more than one bouncie. Please respond with your opinions.

3rd Gade Wax Museum

The wax museum was great! Moms and Dads were there, students from other classes were there, the newspaper was there. I think it was very exciting to have the newspaper come. I didn't think I would be picked for the newspaper,but I wanted to be interviewed by a reporter. Some of my favorite wax people were William Clark, Amelia Earhart and Tony Hawk. I was Meriwether Lewis. Who were your favorites? I think that the wax museum was a great way to learn about different people, a genre called biographies. I had a great time at the wax museum. How about you?

The Volcano in Iceland

About a week ago from April 20, 2010, (the day Lisa Campbell Ernst came), Iceland had a very huge volcano. Ash shot up as high as airplanes flew. All of the airports in Iceland could not fly, because the ash is still in the sky and it would get caught in the plane's motors. The ash contains particles that are as sharp as glass, so that when they come in contact with the planes working parts, they sand the parts down causing the engines to malfunction, and then the planes would not be able to fly. The ash was so powerful it went from Iceland where it erupted to Europe.

Ash landed in some European countries such as Norway, Poland and more. Many royal people in Poland died from a plane disaster and President Barak Obama was going to Poland for a funeral for them.

Even a week later, the ash is still coming up from the volcano, but it is not going as high as it did before.

How do you think we can help the people of Iceland and all of the other countries where the ash landed? Remember, we cannot fly because the airplanes cannot fly because all of the ash will get in the airplane's motors and then the airplanes cannot fly.

We Are Having a Visiting Author!

Every year Countryside has a visiting author. This year it is author and illustrator Lisa Campbell Ernst. She is coming April 18th, 2010. Mrs. Ernst wrote The Gingerbread Girl, a Monarch book. The Gingerbread Girl was a Monarch book this year, if you remember, and it was written by Mrs. Ernst! If you want to order some of her books, I believe you can. You have to send in the order form by April 17th, 2010. This form was sent to the oldest child in Countryside. This order form and the list of Mrs. Ernst's books are in the Countryside newsletter. Ask your parents if you can order some of her books.

I hope you are as excited as I am about Mrs. Ernst coming. What do you think about Mrs. Ernst coming? Do you like visiting authors? What do you think about all of her books? Paper Less

What would school be like without paper? School would be very different if we did not have paper. Every single day we would be on the computer working on… Everything! ISATs would be on the computer, spelling tests, math tests, social studies, some science even. I wonder if there was no paper, would computers be cheaper or they would they be more expensive? I don't know about you, but I think no paper would be kind of cool and it would help the school be green. What about you? Please respond your opinion.

Bus Pick Up Line

I wish we could go back to waiting outside and watch for our car to come. For those of you that always take the bus, what would happen is you sit out at the front of the school, Ms. K. would wait there with you. You were allowed to sit on the benches and talk to your friends while you wait, we had a lot more freedom. Now we have to wait in the hall outside the gym and wait for the teachers to call your number. We are not allowed to talk because of the echo. Basically all you can do is stand there in the hall like statues until the call your number. It is silent. Some kids always worry because they forget their number, Ms. Dionosotes and Ms. Gorges have to tell you your number. I liked being picked up outside rather than in the loud hallway, we were even allowed to do flip-flops in the grass. My sister and I (when she still went to this school) would have a flip- flop contest. I had a lot more fun when we could wait outside.

Should we have a new school mascot?

I was thinking that we should have a new school mascot. The Wildcat is getting kind of old. I want people to care about the school mascot. So what about a new mascot? Since we play sports we should have a school mascot that people care about. Kids should be enthusiastic about their mascot.

I mean it really won't be hard because all we should do is vote (one class at a time) who's the mascot. It could be a wolf, a bobcat or a tiger (or any kind of symbol that's inspiring, you could write them in as a candidate). Anyway, I know most people might not agree of it, but why not see! We want to make our school awesome!

If you want to keep the wildcat, write about why you want to keep it. If you want a new school mascot, also tell me why. I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion on my blog about the school mascot in your comments.

If you have a special friend or think you do. . . this is how they should act:
They are always on your side; They always help you when you are hurt;
They never lie to you; They never make fun of you; They never share your secrets with anyone else; They treat you the way they want to be treated.

For example if you were hurt, they care. If you like someone who you think is your friend and they laugh at you, are they a true friend? No, they are not. If they share your secrets and shout it out loud then they are not a true friend. Cherish your true friends. They are valuable. Do you have a true friend?

A Futuristic School?

Wouldn't school be cool if we had a futuristic school? The bus ride that now takes a long time to get to school would be different because we would have personal electric rockets to fly us here. The gruesome lunches I blogged about last week would be limitless in variety, served by robots. Speaking of robots, our teachers would be robots. At recess, instead of bundling up in snow clothes, we strap on jetpacks. The playground equipment would be different, super slides. We would have helmets that go over our head and give us all the information we need for the day. What would a futuristic school look like? I think school will be very cool if it was futuristic!

Why can't we have better lunches at school?

I wonder why we can't have better lunches? I mean the pizza is good and all, but come on, I mean it's definitely not the best in the world. It doesn't have to be the best, but why not have Pizza Hut quality. The most disgusting thing in my opinion is the mashed potatoes with turkey and gravy, ewwww! And the French toast sticks, we already had breakfast! Who wants two breakfasts in one day? Another thing is the grilled cheese here is terrible. I ate it here yesterday. The crust is like a rock.

Yes, I still have things to criticize. Now this is just plain crazy. Strawberry banana toast sticks? Like I said, who wants two breakfasts? The only real good food here is the Bosco Sticks. I just had a comment from Mrs. Martindale that the pizza tastes like cardboard. Definitely true. Why can't we have better lunches?

I give this restaurant only 2 stars out of 5.

Do you like the Olympics?

If you do, then how about we have are own Olympics at school. We could do cheerleading , soccer, football, basketball , tennis, baseball, and kickball, and more. Instead of gold, silver and bronze medals, whichever class wins, they have a choice of a chocolate trophy that is ten feet long or a water balloon fight with all of the teachers. If you want both prizes, your class has to win the water balloon fight. Instead of just a one day long field day, we could have one day for the Olympics and the other for field day. And if you do not want to do one kind of sport, you do not have to do it. You could be a spectator and just watch. Lunch would be pizza or ice cream.
We think this would be very fun for our school to do. What do you think of our idea?

Are you watching the Winter Olympics in Vancouver? We have a number of Olympic website suggestions on our Countryside webpage. Our class is doing Gail Skroback Hennessey's web quest. We want to hear from you. What did you think about Friday night's opening ceremonies? What sport have you enjoyed watching? There is talk about changing the luge structure so there would be limits to the speeds these sleds can reach. At what point does safety supercede the original competiveness of a sport?

I would like it if 3rd graders could sit in the back of the bus because the 4th and 5th graders hog it. This is not fair to 3rd and 2nd graders. 4th and 5th graders say that only 4th and above can sit in the back, but when they were in 3rd they sat in the back. So something I want to know is, Who made this rule?
How can we change this? What do you think?

The Gogo's Craze

Everyone in 3rd grade is going crazy for Gogo's. They are little trading people that are very, very fun! Boys and girls love to play with them during indoor recess. We trade and battle with them.

Some Gogo's are rare, and some are ultra rare. There are 15 rare gogos, and 5 ultra rare Gogo's. The way that we like to battle is to have two people [maybe three at the most] line their Gogo's up and try to either flick or push them and get theGogo's to hit the other person's Gogo. You get 3 lives, but you lose your Gogo if you are playing for keeps. If you play for fun, you don’t have to give up you're Gogo.

There are 5 different series of Gogo's. Most people only have series 1 but some have series 2, 3, and 4. I've never seen a person with series 5. The best place to go for Gogo's is Learning Express, but they are also at Target and other stores like that. I will give you one of the names for an ultra rare Gogo. The answer is: Fist. You will learn more about this when you get GOGO'S!

Let's Learn a New Language

Sometimes I feel lucky, because I am in Dual Language. Dual Language is where you learn to read and write and talk in Spanish. I would like to talk to more people in Spanish. So I was thinking maybe students that aren’t in Dual Language could learn Spanish in a one hour class. They could attend a class once a week and then maybe everybody would get better at speaking and understanding Spanish. We would become one of the smartest schools. I think it would be fun for other students to learn Spanish. What do you think of my idea? Please respond.

How to Feel Better in this Horrible, Cold, Weather

This weather is terrible, this weather is horrible, but I think we can still have fun. We can throw a huge party inside our school class rooms that reminds us of the beach. We could put the heat up high, sweltering, so we are sweating, just like the summer. Everybody would wear shorts or a bathing suit. We could drink smoothies in colorful cups and use a straw with a little umbrella. We could put on beach music and somewhere in the building we could set up a miniature golf course.
Can you think of other ideas that we could do to make this a beach party exciting?

Why Can't Students Change Some Things in School?

Us kids all have the power to change the world, all we have to do is believe in ourselves. We are not helpless, we are full of power. That is why I came up with an assignment to write to the President and tell him what we think should be changed. Other classes are welcome to join in this assignment. In fact, I bet we could change a lot of things if the whole school did this.

There are some things that must be included in the letter, you need to write your first and last name and Countryside School's address. The assignment is due on December 10th, 2009, but instead of mailing them yourself, you can give them to me, Camille in Ms. Muligano’s classroom. I am in 4th grade. You can come to Mrs. Muligano's classroom to hand me your letter. If you do not want to participate, that is ok. Remember, we are POWERFUL!

Field Day, My Favorite!

On field day at Countryside School, all of the kids go outside for fun and games. Field day is my favorite celebration at our school. One of the things we, as a school, do is clean up. We all clean up the outside of the school. We just started this part of field day last year, but I still like it.
Other activities we do are: tug of war, dunk tank, relay races, dancing, and much, much, more.
One time, we got to dance with our gym teacher; it was so fun! We love our tug of war! Last year, we did 4 ropes in a row for our tug of war! What is your favorite day at Countryside and why is it your favorite day? Keep Posting!

The Art Fair

The art fair was awesome this year. There were many different stations. At each station every student could do a different activity. I really enjoyed the scavenger hunt; you were given a list of items to find in different pieces of art work, for example, a piece of fruit or a part of a sports event. If you found everything on the list, you got a prize. I did not get a prize, but did enjoy the quest. Also, at this year’s Art Fair, Ms. Martin hired a variety of artists, one made pots, another played music. I hope next year’s art fair will be as much fun as this year’s was. The Chicks have Hatched

In 4th grade, we hatched baby chicks. They hatched on May 4th and May 5th, 2009. Some were experimental eggs. These hatched with colors other than yellow. The experimental eggs were all different colors, brown and black mixed into chipmunk patterns on their backs! One of the most amazing things about the chicks is that they could run really fast, and they could escape easily out of student’s hands. Some facts are that it takes about 21 days to hatch. During the first day of incubation, they start to form their eyes and their heads. Chicks that have still not hatched after day 21 are usually not healthy and vigorous. This year we probably had one of the best hatches ever, 32 out of 36 chicks had hatched! The percentage of chicks that had hatched was 88%. Do you think you would like hatching baby chicks? This book is amazing! This book is deciated to readers who love drama, comedy, adventures, and Good! The story is about 3 kids, Violet, the oldest, Klaus, the middle child, and Sunny, the youngest, having to deal with the person who treats them horribly: Count Olaf. They lived with him once and hated him. He comes back, and this time he does somethign even worse, he kills their most trusted guardian, Dr. Montgomery. They have to deal with this and handle it. (Read the first book to understand.)

Mrs. Fitz

Ms. Fitz has been around for about 50 years. Ms. Fitz is a rummage sale, with incredible deals! They had everything for sale: bikes, huge card table, scooters, phones, clothes, tons of toys, frames, and more. Ms. Fitz is one of Countryside’s fundraisers. Many people come to Ms. Fitz: seniors, toddlers, middle aged people, and the kids from Countryside School. Many people volunteer their time. I worked there on Saturday for four hours. We have many fundraisers at Countryside, but my favorite is Ms. Fitz. So next year go to Ms. Fitz!

James Ransom Came to Countryside School

About two weeks ago on a Wednesday illustrator James Ransom came to Countryside School. He did a presentation on the steps of illustrating a book. He answered many questions we had and even drew some pictures! I was one of the lucky ones to enjoy a lunch with him. What a treat. It is great to have illustrators and authors come to our school. 118 Elements!

There are 118 elements in the Periodic table and other elements are still being discovered. Most of the elements are found in nature but some are found in laboratories. Everything is made up of elements! There are many elements that you know, some of which are found in your house or in your area, such as: Gold (Au), Silver (Ag), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb), and so on, but there are A LOT more. Like did you know the potassium symbol is K? Or that it is found in bananas? Or that Chlorine is found in your local swimming pool to keep it clean? All elements are different: some have Latin symbols; oxygen is in air; Argon is found in light bulbs.
Now let’s try guessing. I’ll give you a clue and you answer. Here we go!

So now my sister, Madeline, is studying the planets.
They are learning many facts, such as the age of

the Sun, and the planets all belong to a system called the Solar System. They made display boards of their planets.

Derrick Rose: Rookie of the Year
(If you like the Bulls and basketball read this!)

Derrick Rose, the rookie, was drafted over by the Bulls from Memphis. Derrick Rose is 6ft 3in tall, 190lb, and born on October 4, 1988, in Chicago, Illinois.

When he was on Memphis, he was a star. Watch out for number 23! Because of the dunks, fast lay ups, 3 pointers, and passes, Derrick Rose could do it all. Let's talk about the Bulls now. He was drafted first pick. When he played, it started all over again. He won the NBA Skills Challenge and Rookie of the Year, too. Derrick averaged 16.6 points a game.

So maybe, you will watch Derrick Rose on TV some time. I hope you loved my review on Derrick Rose!!!

Gym Show and "Earth "Movie

The Gym Show is on April 22, 2009 and April 23, 2009. Our school is trying something different this year, one change is that only fifth grade can participate in the Gym Show. It is set up differently with all sorts of stations.

There are a lot of things going on besides the Gym Show, on April 23, 2009. The whole school is going to go see a movie called “Earth.” For each ticket that you buy, the movie producers say a tree will be planted. WOW, our entire school is going and more than 500 trees will be planted. On April 21, 2009, there was a contest to see which grade threw out less garbage. A5 the end of the day, first grade threw away the least amount of garbage. They win a free recess!!!

A Book Review

Life as We Knew It is a very adventurist and sad book! It is about a 16 year old girl. She has two brothers. There is something that hits the moon. Since the moon is so important to the planet Earth, it controls whether there is a lot of tsunamis, and all other kinds of weather. The weather on the planet is now in jeopardy causing havoc everywhere. The markets are running out of food and all of the shops are closing. Lists of dead people appear everywhere. When a list of all the dead people shows up on the internet, they find a lot of their second cousins and even some first cousins on the list. Miranda’s (the 16 year old girl in the book.) parents got a divorce and her journey continues.

Read the book to find out the struggle of the girl’s life!
I recommend you read this book!

Pirates in the 1700's or in the 2000's

Lately, there have been lots of terrorist sightings. These new terrorists are really pirates, just like the pirates in the 1400’s. They terrorize people at sea. They get their bounty/loot instead of from gold, by hijacking a boat full of barrels of oil or different types of cargo, costing over millions dollars. They, also, almost hijacked an American cruise ship, and unfortunately they took lots of their money. They are probably doing this now because they have a law across the globe that doesn’t allow weapons on a boat. All the pirates need to do is take their weapons, threaten the captain and the crew, and hold the cargo for ransom. Why are their more pirates today? What can we do to change this increase?

Alden Retirement Home

Countryside students in 4th and 5th grade have been able to go to Alden Retirement Home on Thursday afternoons with Mrs. Dunn, a 1st grade teacher at Countryside.

This is all part of the Countryside Connection Club. This is a club that gives students the opportunity to communicate with members in our community. Students turn in a permission slip saying their parents are ok with them going, these students get on the bus and are taken to Alden.

As you walk in, you will be delighted by a little pond with water running off the rocks and delightful little fish. The outdoor garden has so many colors in the fall! As you continue your walk, you’ll be welcomed by the front desk. As you pass this desk, you will go down the hall and you’ll see a cage of birds, another welcoming sight. You will eventually be led to this little room filled with joyful faces, Josephine, Dick and many more. You can choose one person to do certain crafts with or you can wander around and talk to many different people.

The people there are truly happy to see you. So smile, have fun and see you there!

New Fitness Equipment

Last year, the PTO bought Countryside Elementary School fitness equipment! Everyone loves them. Many people think they’ve changed the school in many ways. I (Morgan) have asked some kids questions on how the equipment has changed the school.
“How has the equipment changed the school?”
Blake (4th) answered “I think it has changed the school by getting everyone more fit! Plus, they think it is more like fun than exercise!”
Another question was “Should we have more or less equipment?”
Hannah (3rd) answered “More because kids should exercise but not too much because we don’t want the PTO spending too much money.”
Another question is “Do you think that the school would be better off without the equipment?”
Kristen (3rd) answered, “No because everyone has gotten more fit and healthy thanks to the PTO!!!”

So the main thing is everyone thinks you get more fit when you use the equipment. But that’s not the only way to get fit. You can run, jump, get on your bike and a lot more. Plus, all exercise is fun! But make sure you tell an adult before you exercise. Also make sure you warm up!

The FISH Food Pantry

Fourth grader, Karli, has been to the Fish Food Pantry. The Fish Food Pantry is a place where people who can't afford to buy food at the grocery store, like Jewel or Dominick’s, can get food. The Fish Food Pantry, which is an acronym for Friends I Shall Help, gives people food for free. The Fish Food Pantry allows Countryside school students to come in and help stack the shelves with food for the poor to get and take home with them. Countryside students donate canned and boxed food. Because the food is given away freely, they run out of it easily. Besides food donations, they, also, accept money donations and clothes. I would recommend that you go and help at the FISH Food Pantry, too.

Will The Blackhawks win a Stanley Cup?

Right now, the Chicago Blackhawks are seventh place in a league of thirty different hockey teams. To make it into the Stanley Cup finals, you need to be in the top eight teams. Maintaining first place are the San Jose Sharks. They’ve been first place for a very long time. Sadly, the Blackhawks slipped from fourth best, to now seventh best. One of my biggest questions is, can they work their way back down. Our arch enemies, the Detroit Red Wings, are second best in the league. Points wise, we are pretty close. We have eighty three as the top two teams, one of them are greatest enemy, each have ninety three points. In our division, we are second, the Red Wings are the best in our division. The Blackhawks are trying very hard and playing well. We have to remember, out of thirty teams, seventh is not bad at all. How do you think the Blackhawks are playing? If you want, in comments, put how you think the Blackhawks are playing. I’m interested to hear (or read) what everybody else thinks about are teams. Obviously, the scores and standing change fast so I’ll try and keep you posted. Also, look at the key on the bottom of the page to see how points are taken.

A Lose = 0 points
In a tie

What Do You Think About PINK?

What do you think about Mrs. Newhouse, Mrs. Brewer and Mrs. Holmes dying their hair pink?
They said they would dye their hair pink if we reached our school goal of raising $450. The students raised $854! This money is part of a donation to buy books for kids. What a great cause! They look great in pink. I can’t wait to hear your comments.
